Record Your Computer Screen: Perhaps you are an expert who needs to record your screen for a presentation at work, a software developer who creates how-to videos, or someone who wants to upload useful video clips to YouTube. On Windows and macOS, you can capture screen activity thanks to built-in tools, but there are also many third-party screen recording apps.

1) mac OS | Record Your Computer Screen

Mac comes with its own screen recording feature for macOS Mojave and above. Open the app or window you want to capture and press Shift + Command + 5 to open the system screen capture tool. You can use the toolbar at the bottom to record the entire screen, just the selected window, or a custom part of the screen. Click the Options button to select a location to save the recording and start the countdown timer to start recording. Be sure to check the option to use your Mac’s microphone when recording your own voice or external audio. computer screen

Click Record Whole Screen or Record Selected to start recording. A record button appears in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click this button to stop recording and a thumbnail of the recording will be added to your computer. Double-click the screen capture file to play it in your default video player.

You can also trigger a screen capture directly from QuickTime on your Mac. Open QuickTime Player and click File> New Screen Capture. If this is your first time, you will be asked to open System Preferences and give QuickTime Player permission to record screens. Go to Settings and select the check box to grant the appropriate permissions. You can use your Mac’s recording tools by resuming a new recording via QuickTime. computer screen

2) Windows | Record Your Computer Screen

(I) The game bar built into Windows is designed to record games that you play directly on your PC or stream from your Xbox console. However, you can capture screen activity from other applications just as easily. To set this, go to Settings> Games> Xbox Game Bar and toggle the Enable Xbox Game Bar switch. computer screen

Here you can also change all the keyboard shortcuts to open the game bar, take screenshots and even record videos. You can also trigger the game bar by pressing the Xbox button on your controller when you connect your Xbox controller to your PC. You can record activity on most applications and Windows, except for certain Windows applications such as Windows Desktop, File Explorer, and Windows. computer screen

Go to the recording screen and press Win + G to open the game bar. Several gamebar widgets appear on the screen with controls for taking screenshots, recording video and audio, and broadcasting screen activity. Click the Start Recording button or use the Win + Alt + R keyboard shortcuts to capture screen activity. Then perform all the screen actions you want to capture. Clicking on the screen hides the gamebar widget and replaces it with a small floating bar in the upper right corner of the screen. You can use this bar to control recording. computer screen

Windows

To stop recording, click the Record button on the floating bar. When the recording is finished, you will be notified that the game clip has been recorded. Click the notification to see the video in the game bar. Click the Play button to play the current video. computer screen

You can also view and play videos from their default location directly in the File Explorer: C: \ Users \ [username] \ Videos \ Captures. The video is saved here as an MP4 file and can be uploaded anywhere. computer screen

You can fine-tune the game bar by going to Settings > Games > Capture. From here, you can change the default storage location for your video, enable background recording to post-record your activity, record your video with your audio, or change your frame rate to 30-60 frames per second. computer screen

On the game bar itself, click the settings icon to the right of the top bar. Browse the various categories in the Settings tab to customise shortcuts, change themes, adjust widgets, set background recordings, and record sound with video. computer screen

(II) Free Cam is a very simple screen recorder for Windows users, but it fits most needs. This program records screen activity and audio and saves the recording as a MP4 file. Simply click the New Capture button and select the area of the screen you want to capture. Click the record button to start recording and press Esc when finished. The recording appears in the preview window and can be edited, saved as a video file, or uploaded directly to YouTube.

3) Linux | Record Your Computer Screen

Free OBS Studio runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and has many features in one program. Use the program’s floating control panel to start and stop recording. On the go, OBS Studio can record screen activity, microphones, and computer audio. The program then saves the output as a video file.

Linux

You can also live stream the video or switch to studio mode to add cuts, dissolves, and other transitions to your video. The program provides some settings that allow you to change the format and other criteria of both the video and audio parts of the recording. OBS Studio may seem intimidating at first, but you should be able to understand it and learn how to use it effectively.
