Currently, Melbourne holds the title of having the world’s largest cricket stadium having the spectator capacity of 1,00,024. History

Sardar Patel Stadium was based in Motera and this happened to be the biggest stadium from all along. This amazing stadium comes with a lot of porspects, the history when traced back was first made and this cricket ground was done for the players and the previous teams.

Earlier

Earlier the stadium was known as Gujrat Cricket Stadium. The man behind the design of the stadium was Sashi Prabhu.the seating capacity of the stadium was 53,000. The stadium was built in 1986 where Sunil Gavaskar completed his 10,000 runs (in 1987) in a match against Pakistan. And years after Kapil Dev became the highest wicket-taker in test cricket at this ground with 432^nd wicket into his bucket of achievements. It is also known as Motera Stadium.

Renovation:

In 2015 a decision was taken to demolish and renovate the stadium and increase its capacity from 53,000 to 1,10,000. It is a 700 crore project. Thus, making it the largest cricket stadium in the world which is a great achievement for the country as they fulfilled their promise of renovating the stadium in 4.5 years. The contract for renovation was given to Larsen & Turbro. The architecture company hired for the reconstruction is Populous, the one who constructed the design of Melbourne Cricket Ground. Earlier the deadline for completion was 2019 which was extended and is now expected to complete by March 2020.

Rename:

The stadium which is situated in the heart of Gujrat, Ahemdabad is now renamed from Motera Stadium to Sardar Cricket Stadium into to pay tribute to great visionary leader Sardar Vallabhai Patel who was a great politician of his time and served as Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Facilities:

There has been the addition of new facilities besides the improvement of pre-existing ones.

• Traffic jams pose a huge problem when matches are played especially during international matches. Then managing traffic becomes a great challenge for the respective designated authorities. So to come out of this chaos, three new exit routes are being constructed to soothe out the process of traffic. Also. During emergencies to it will become an easy evacuation process. The largest exit road is 100 ft wide, second will be 90 ft wide and the third one will be between 60 ft to 80 ft.
• Great effort has been made to utilize sustainable power and thus adopting an eco-friendly method by constructing the solar power plant. This is a commendable initiative taken by the authorities.
• It will support a clubhouse, Olympic size swimming pool, indoor cricket academy, parking area- which can hold 3000 cars and 10,000 bikes, 50 rooms.
• The pitches will be made for black and red soil.
• A proper Sub-Surface drainage facility is made which will dry the cricket ground within 30 minutes during heavy rains. In this way, the match won’t get canceled. This is great news for cricket fans as well as players.
• The stadium is built in two seating tiers.

The old stadium witnessed many international matches, these are:

• The number of One Day Internationals(ODIs) played: 24.
• The number of Test matches Played: 12.
• The stadium was the host for the 2011 world cup match.
